If you ask a Norwegian to name you the first fruit or berry that they think of when you say “Norway” ,then they will most likely say tyttebær ( lingonberry).
For those who do not know, tyttebær is a small sour fruit/berry that grows mostly in the north of Europe, but is also found in the Pacific northwest, and is mostly used in Scandinavia, and are a popular side to any Typical Norwegian dish.
They look very much like small cranberries, and are sour just like them, but have a more mild taste, which makes it go with almost everything.
Tyttebær are not meant to be eaten like their blue cousins (aka blueberries), they are way to sour, what most of us do is we make or just buy a jam, which we call tyttebærsyltetøy ( lingonberry jam) and it is really easy to make.
You simply wash the berries cook them with the water for 10 minutes and then add sugar until it has dissolved.
Then fill it into glasses and it will be amazing no question about it.
Here is a basic recipe for the jam
1kg (2.2lbs) of the berrys
3dl (1.2 cups) water
500g (1.1lbs) sugar
And a picture of the finished product.
